Connecticut contractor registration: home improvement, new home and major contractors
Connecticut's Department of Consumer Protection registers home improvement contractors, new home construction contractors and major contractors, and licenses the trades.
Connecticut regulates contractors through the Department of Consumer Protection (DCP). Under the Home Improvement Act (CGS 搂 20-420), no one may hold themselves out as a home improvement contractor or salesperson without a certificate of registration. DCP also registers new home construction contractors and major contractors and licenses trades such as electrical, plumbing and heating work.
What the data shows
This site's Connecticut directory is built from DCP's State Licenses and Credentials file on data.ct.gov, limited to business credentials. It lists 16,290 home improvement contractors, 2,391 new home construction contractors, 723 major contractors and 352 trade-licensed businesses with Connecticut addresses. Fairfield, New Haven and Hartford counties have the most.
State building and highway work
For state and municipal public building work over $1 million in designated classifications, contractors must prequalify with the Department of Administrative Services (CGS 搂 4a-100). That program excludes highway and bridge projects administered by the Department of Transportation, which prequalifies its own primes. See how to bid CTDOT contracts.
